Mark Twain’s Debauched Ice Cream

Mark Twain's Debauched Ice Cream

This recipe from Black Sea by Caroline Eden describes what she thinks the ice cream Twain ate in Odessa may have been like. It includes a dash of Jamaican rum, similar to the rum Isaac Babel says was smuggled ashore there.

Cook Time 6 hours

Cuisine Ukranian
Servings 3 cups

Ingredients

  • 14 oz can of sweetened condensed milk
  • 2 cups heavy cream
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 4 tbsp dark rum

Instructions

  • Put the condensed milk, cream and vanilla into a large bowl and stir in the rum.
  • Using an electric hand mixer, move around the bowl in a slow clockwise direction until it thickens. This will take about 2 minutes.
  • Using a spatula, scrape into a freezer container, cover with a lid or plastic wrap, and freeze until firm (around six hours). If you have your own ice cream maker, you might put the mixture into the ice cream maker and follow directions.
  • Eat within a couple of days.
